Naturtint Expert Advice: Post Partum Hair Loss

As if there wasn’t enough to worry about as a new mum you suddenly realise that your hair has started dropping out.

During pregnancy, you might have been lucky enough to experience a  thick and shiny mane of hair. After having the baby, however, your locks could start shedding excessively. This normal symptom results from hormonal changes in the body. So how long does postpartum hair loss last, and can you prevent it from happening?

We spoke to hairdresser, Kerry Capewell, who heads up the hair colour brand Naturtint’s advice line to find out what’s going on!

“Well, first of all, don’t worry about it. It’s a perfectly normal event and in fact, you’re only losing the hair that you would normally have lost over the last nine months.

“There are lots of hormonal changes going on during your pregnancy and one of the effects of that is preventing normal hair loss. Remember that we shed hair all the time and new growth comes in.

“But this normal loss is halted during pregnancy as a result of the hormonal changes but once your hormones return to normal after pregnancy, there’s a drop in estrogen, and that causes shedding to resume.

“So, in effect, all that is happening is that you are losing the extra hair your body held on to over your pregnancy.”

There’s even a proper term for it, if you want to sound knowledgeable – telogen effluvium – and it takes about three months for all that extra hair to fall out, which is why the effects are so noticeable three months or so after giving birth.

Kerry is keen to reassure new mums that the hair loss is just a temporary phase though, and it’s unlikely that you will go from extra thick to barely there.

“Whilst it can be upsetting to see hair drop out, it is generally just a temporary phase and you will have new hair growing back at the same time,” she said.

So, what can you do to help lessen the effect of the hair loss?

First of all, make sure your diet is rich in hair-boosting proteins, vitamins and minerals to encourage healthy growth.

And make sure you use nourishing hair care products, like the below from Naturtint’s Nourishing range, to help prevent breakage, the last thing you need is to lose even more hair through brittleness!

Of course, if the hair loss seems abnormally severe or you are worried about it, you should talk with your GP as there are health issues that can cause it.
