Naturtint Expert Advice: Caring for grey hair

While it looks as though we’re seeing the end of Covid and its restrictions on the horizon, many women are choosing to embrace the habits they developed over the last couple of years.

One in particular, the trend for natural grey hair, was driven by the repeated closure of hair salons and it looks like it might be hanging around for while.

But grey hair calls for specific hair care, just as coloured hair does, to prevent it looking dull and developing yellow tones.

Kerry Capewell, Naturtint’s hairdresser, who heads up its customer colour advice hotline said that as you age, the cells in your hair that produce its pigment also begin to slow, which is part of the reason why you start greying.

“Your hair can also become drier thanks to decreased oil gland activity on your scalp that also comes with getting older.”

But as more women allow their natural tones to show through, there has also been an increase in the amount of products on offer to care and protect grey hair.

Kerry said: “Look for a shampoo and conditioner with neutralising pigments to instantly remove yellow undertones and also to enhance greys. Since grey hair can often be dry, it’s worth investing in a weekly intense moisturising mask too, or a leave in conditioner specifically designed for grey hair.”
